Day 27, Oct 7, 2017, O Cebreiro to Triacastela, 13 miles

We were dropped off by taxi to O Cebreiro. We stopped for a few minutes to admire the view from the top of the valleys filled with fog, and started on our walk.

We walked uphill for a few kms. and came to our first village of Linares. It was a really tiny place and we continued on uphill until we hit San Roque at 1270 metres. There is a lovely sculpture of a pilgrim holding on to his hat and fighting the wind, by Jose Maria Acuna.

We passed Hospital de Condesa which used to have the most famous pilgrim hospital in the area. We climbed a last little bit which was incredibly steep up to the highest point in Galicia on the French way. It was at 1337 meters and boasted some fabulous views. All our walks through Galicia have been just beautiful.

From this point on, we started our descent, easy at first. The villages that we passed now gave us ample evidence that we had left sheep country and entered cow country. Lots of cow dung everywhere and the all pervading smell - whoooo!!! We came to Fonfria and met Terry taking a break. We chose to walk on to Biduedo where we stopped to check on a small hotspot on Lisa's heel. We aired it and taped it and walked on. We met a lady from Norway here who had done the Camino multiple times. From Biduedo to Triacastela was going to be our most brutal descent. It was!!
Luckily, the path was not rocky but easy on the feet. We met several people we had met in the past few days and continued on until hitting Fillobal. We saw a the smallest church on the Camino here

and then a 800 year old chestnut tree.

Chestnuts are present everywhere in Spain and we have seen enormous numbers of these trees lately. Luckily have not been hit on the head by a falling chestnut or two :-)
From here to Triacastela is a matter of minutes and we were at our hotel/albergue in a very short time. We decided to celebrate the downhill with our usual poison and then went to Complexo Xacobeo to rest and relax. We had an early dinner at the restaurant belonging to the hotel, walked around town a little, and had an early night.
