Day 21, Villavante to Astorga, Oct. 1, 2017, 13 miles

We had discovered the night before that we could have walked to Mercedes' farmhouse if we had picked the Villamazarife path. Oh well!! We set off from her farm to Astorga. It was a lovely walk to the first town, Puente de Orbigo which had a lovely Roman bridge over the river Orbigo.

Right across the bridge was the village of Hospital de Orbigo. Here, a very cute little kitten came running over to us and decided to escort us for the next couple of miles to the village of Villares de Orbigo. We were having the best weather as well as lovely scenery. We had some small climbs and descents until we came to Santibanez de Valdeiglesias. We stopped for our usual cafe con leche and headed out. After this village were the bigger climbs. We also saw warnings about seeing wild boars. The walk was delightful. We then came to a spot where we could see Astorga below us.

We walked down towards Astorga passing San Justo de la Vega and entered Astorga. The way in wasn't pretty but we made it to our hotel - Spa Ciudad de Astorga. We checked in and decided to walk over to the cathedral. The Gaudi designed bishop's palace was right across from us.

It was closed because of it being Sunday, but was beautiful from the outside. We then went to the cathedral to get a stamp and headed back to the hotel to use the spa.

Boy, was that a huge disappointment! The water in the jacuzzi was luke warm at best and the jets weren't working. We called reception and after a short wait the maintenance person came and got the jets to work, but couldn't heat the water. After a miserable ten minutes, we gave up the ghost and went back to our room. After showering, I decided to blog. We will soon be heading down to dinner.   Lisa just calculated that we have walked just over 280 miles to date!  I can't believe that we only have 12 days to go!!
