Day 8, Sep 18, 2017, Najera - Santo Domingo de la Calzada, 13.6 mi
The taxi took us back to Najera to the starting point of our walk today. It was a coldish day and cloudy, so pleasant walking weather. The way out of Najera was a little odd but not too bad.
Very busy because we were right by the main road. After an easy walk of 5.74 kms we came to Azofra. A tiny village with nothing much happening. We stopped to stretch and then continued on another 10 kms. before hitting Ciruena. The landscape was interesting - red soil, swathes of rolling vineyards, interspersed with cereal fields. The colors were very pleasing and it was a lovely walk, not really taxing. Ciruena is a very small village but has a large golf course just outside. This appears to have caused a large community of holiday condos which are uniformly hideous. There is really nothing else happening here. Super quiet and kinda boring. We sat down at a park bench for our break. Stretched a bit, drank some yogurt, had a banana and went on our way. The wind had suddenly picked up and it was coooold! We kept going which helped warm us up a bit and we also had a bit of a climb. The track was very rocky and this made it hard going.
After another little climb, we suddenly saw Santo Domingo spread out in front of us. It motivated us to hurry down and we were at our hotel by 2 p.m. Came back, drained our legs and stretched a bit. Drank some tea and went down to eat lunch/dinner. They call it lunch we call it dinner.
Also going to visit the Cathedral de Santo Domingo since we haven't been in a church today!
Tomorrow is Santo Domingo to Belorado which is a 23 km walk and apparently a tough one. Only tomorrow will tell. G'nite all.
