Day 18, Bercianos to Mansilla de las Mulas, 18 miles
This was one of the most boring days we've had so far; ok, the most boring day. It was flat, with absolutely nothing to see except dried out fields of corn or weeds, and really hot and dusty.
We were dropped off to Bercianos early and we walked the first 5 miles to El Burgo Ranero. Had our coffee break there and walked the next 9.5 miles without seeing a single village until we hit Relegios. Luckily the path was shady and they had a number of picnic spots for us to stop and take breaks. At lunch we sat down and I decided that I would try the chocolate milk in a tube that I had bought a few days ago in another village along the way. Well, it turns out that it was neither chocolate nor regular milk, but sweetened condensed milk. Lisa was laughing hysterically while I was carefully trying to squeeze the stuff.
It was great in the tiniest of doses but not what I was expecting :-). Taught me to always wear my glasses to read the info on the package.
We then walked on until we got to Religios and had a beer there. Continued on for another 4 miles with a break for some chocolate with caramel (always makes things feel better) until we got to our hotel - Casa Rural Los Soportales. Quite a nice hotel with a large room and bathroom. We rested for a bit and then had dinner. At dinner we sat with a Polish couple, Josef and Cristina, who had minimal English skills. We had a fun dinner talking about our respective trips and their grandkids (they have 3 including an adorable 7 month old). Got back to the room to blog and sleep.
We are playing hookey tomorrow! Lot of guide books told us that if we could, we should skip the walk tomorrow since it's a really short one (11. 5 miles) and very dusty and along major roads, and to instead take a bus into Leon to explore the city. So that's exactly what we are doing!!!
