Day 13, Sep 23, 2017, Hornillos del Camino to Castrojeriz, 13 miles
We were driven from our hotel in Isar to our starting point in Hornillos. We started walking around 8:30 a.m. It was a short walk and we set out quite energetically. It was completely foggy and visibility was around 50 feet. We had a slow climb up to around a 100 meters and the track leveled off. We still couldn't see anything much around us. It was pleasant walking weather-wise. There were a lot of people on the Camino both in front of us and behind us. Around 10 a.m. the sun broke through and the fog burned off to reveal several windfarms around us. Spain, at least Northern Spain, appears to be hugely into wind energy with tons of windmills around. Don Quixote, anyone? :-)
We continued to walk on until we came to Hontanas, around 8 miles into the journey.
We decided to take a break, enjoy a - what else - cafe con leche and a banana, and rest our legs.
We then walked down to the village church, which was quite lovely. We again had a very small climb and then the path just leveled off. On the way we met some of the peregrinos from last night's dinner. Joanna from Toronto, who is biking all the way, passed us around there. We walked along a very pleasant ave of trees and came upon the ruins of the church of San Anton. This was a church constructed in the 1100s and it was burnt down in the 1400s. It's a beautiful gothic building.
From there, we had around 4 miles left. We walked on and could see Castrojeriz. It was much larger than we expected. Once we got to town, we walked to the church of Santa Maria.
It was a museum cum church, with a lot of liturgical ornaments and vestments and some fairly nice paintings on view. The retablo mayor and the regular retablo were both very pretty.
We then had around a mile left to walk to our hotel. We got here around 2 p.m. (a really quick walk today) and relaxed in our hotel until now when I decided to write up the blog. Our hotel is the Emebed Posada de Castrojeriz. Lovely place with a very sweet girl, Raquel, who is waiting on us hand and foot. Boy, I could get used to this kind of thing. I hope my family's listening. We set off to Fromista tomorrow - a walk of over 15 miles! We have 20 days left now.
