Day 11, Sep 21, 2017, Atapuerca - Burgos, 11.8 miles
We had a great evening at Atapuerca at the Casa Rural Papasol. Lisa and I came down to the reception area to blog and check our phones etc. because wifi was non existent everywhere else. We met a fun group of Frenchmen/and one woman. They spoke only French and we spoke only English and mime and we had so much fun. They were from some area between Marseilles and Toulon. Very friendly and entertaining. Then we slid over a couple of tables to eat dinner. We were seated next to a gentleman from Kentucky! We were so pumped up by then that we were looking forward to talking to someone in Serbian or better yet, Mongol. English seemed so tame! He was a lovely person and told us that he was doing this to complete the trip. Apparently he did the Camino from Leon to Santiago a couple of years ago. He's now walking from St. Jean Pied de Port to Leon. Said he felt guilty about not completing it all. Caarrraaazzyyy!! Dinner was excellent - a lovely salad and a veggie burger without the bun. Lisa had a regular burger without the bun. Everything was cooked perfectly. We've been lucky with our meals so far. They've all been uniformly excellent.
Breakfast was a self serve thing and we left pretty early for Burgos. It was a short walk - 11.8 miles. We set off at a good pace passing through several little villages and stopping for cafe con leche and just to take the weight off of our feet. We had a grueling climb on a very rocky surface even though the views were fabulous.
The walk did follow the highway for the most part which is awful because of the traffic. We had the choice of taking the prettier river route in to Burgos or go the traditional route along the highway. We decided, as most people did, to take the river route. We went past the airport and then down to the river path. We got lost for a bit, but had the gps routing us correctly. We were rewarded with a lovely walk by the river in a park all the way to our hotel.
We went past the museum of human evolution (the only one dedicated to the human race in the world, apparently) and a beautiful dancing fountain
and saw the cathedral to our right - all very lovely.
We stayed at the NH Palacio de Burgos, which was wonderful. After a quick shower, we went down and happened to meet Deirdre, Mary Ann and Gary. We had a lovely chat and then headed to the cathedral. The cathedral is simply amazing. It's the third largest after Sevilla and Toledo.
We took an audio tour and were just blown away. The architecture, the art work, the craftsmanship are all exceptional. After that, we had a lot of time to kill before dinner which was at 8:30 pm. We hung around the plaza and then went for dinner. The wifi was so bad that it didn't save my blog. So this is a retype and not as zingy as my original :-) So sorry all. We are headed to Hornillos del Camino tomorrow - 14 miles.
